Flutter, Flap, Fly!

Teo rides on Papi’s shoulders to the playground, wishing he could soar and swoop like the birds above. He pretends to be a bird on the ground, imitating one fluttering its wings while splashing in a puddle. Soon the playground climbing structure transforms into a big tree as older new playmates join in the fun and take little Teo under their wing. Together they peck, hop and flap their wings, and all snuggle in the nest—giving Teo the confidence to soar and swoop like the birds above.

Includes a note from early literacy expert Dr. Kori Bardige that shows adults how pretend play with young children can be a wonderful occasion to introduce new and interesting vocabulary.

“On the playground with his fathers, Teo observes avian behaviors and imitates a few, wondering what it would be like to soar and swoop through the sky, or to shake off his feathers in a puddle as a bath. Other children join in on the fun, too—nesting together; imagining spreading their wings to fly high. It’s a perfect way to spend the day for all, and this warm, expansive picture book takes curious audiences along for the ride, with its bright watercolor and ink illustrations capturing the lightheartedness of childhood play.” —Michelle Anne Schingler, Foreword Reviews

“Ellen Mayer’s cheerful and lively storytelling always brings a smile …. In her series of Small  Talk Books®, Mayer’s dialogue-rich text models the types of conversations that adults can have with children to promote natural language learning and understanding. Her inclusion of the two older children demonstrates the important impact that older siblings and friend groups as well as adult caregivers can have on the socialization and language development of younger children …. [Estelle] Corke’s animated images … will inspire young readers to join in with their own pretend play. Kids will enjoy keeping an eye out for the birds flying, perching, and nesting throughout the pages …. Bursting with imagination and animated conversations that will pique kids’ inquisitive nature while nurturing their language development, Flutter, Flap, Fly! will enhance any library collection and would be a favorite for repeat reading at home and in the classroom.” —Kathy Lynn of Celebrate Picture Books
